Fecho publishes book on innovative teacher development

University of Georgia reading education professor Bob Fecho has published a new book that guides teachers with creative, dialog-based methods that appeal to students.

Bob Fecho, a professor in the College’s department of language and literacy education, explores diagnostic teaching in his new book titled, Teaching for the Students: Habits of Heart, Mind, and Practice in the Engaged Classroom. The book provides a framework to help teachers develop the necessary focuses, perceptions and intellectual habits that will result in continuous, stimulating dialogue with their practice.

Fecho uses his real life experiences from teaching adolescents and pre-service teachers to guide and offer thought experiments and tools to help educators examine their own teaching. Also, it helps teachers visualize the mechanics of creating a classroom built on dialogue, inquiry and critique. On behalf of student teachers, the book addresses the goals, concerns and questions that teacher education students often bring to class. The book was published by Teachers College Press.

Fecho is also the author of Writing in the Dialogical Classroom: Students and Teachers Responding to the Texts of Their Lives, which was published in March 2011.

He is also the author of “Is This English?” Race, Language, and Culture in the Classroom (2003), which received the James Britton Award for Teacher Research from the National Council of Teachers of English. The book also received Honorable Mention for the 2004 Myers Outstanding Book Awards by the Gustavis Myers Center for the Study of Bigotry and Human Rights.

Fecho is the recipient of both Richard Meade and Alan Purvis awards given by the National Council of Teachers of English.

He earned his Ph. D. in reading, writing and literacy from the University of Pennsylvania.
