University of Georgia College of Education students Kacey Brookes and Sharon Clark have been awarded D. Keith Osborn scholarship awards.
The scholarships are awarded annually to an outstanding senior and an outstanding graduate student by the department of elementary and social studies education.
Brookes, of Naperville, Ill., will graduate in spring 2012 with a B.S. in middle school education. In addition to her classwork, Brookes has worked with Clarke County School District After-School program as a volunteer math tutor. She also serves as vice president of community service for the Kappa Delta Sorority and volunteers for the Girl Scouts of America.
Clark, of Suwanee, graduated in fall 2011 with a Ph.D. in early childhood education. She was recently selected for the Principal Advisory Team at Lovin Elementary School in Gwinnett County, where she teaches third grade and mentors second- and third-grade female students. In addition, Clark tutors students who need academic support before school.
Both received $500 scholarships and their names will be inscribed on a plaque of past recipients on display in the department.
The award is named in honor the late Keith Osborn, a professor in UGA’s department of elementary education for 26 years. Among his many contributions to young children was his service on committees that planned the Head Start program and the Children’s Television Workshop, which created the popular “Sesame Street” program.
His advice on early childhood education was sought by U.S. presidents and commissioners of education. In a career that spanned more than 40 years, he made more than 600 presentations and authored over 100 publications.
