Emily Gray (BSEd ’02) a physical education teacher at Red Cedar Elementary School in Bluffton, S.C., was one of several teachers across the country representing their schools at the HealthierUS School Challenge Celebration at the White House in October.

Gray, who earned her bachelor’s in sport studies at UGA, and her colleagues were recognized for their efforts to create an environment that helps children learn about healthy food choices and being physically active.

Gray also received a grant from Partnership for a Healthier America and its Honorary Chair, First Lady Michelle Obama, recognizing her efforts to promote healthier lifestyles through participation in the Chefs Move! initiative. The grant provides about $2,000 worth of safe, easy to use cookware that can be used in coordination with the school’s “adopted” chef to empower teachers, parents and students themselves to demonstrate healthy cooking.

Gray and her students also were featured in Bluffton Today for cooking an apple side dish from the White House cookbook.

Gray was also one of 43 teachers who recently received grants in the Bright Ideas Program sponsored by Palmetto Electric Trust and Palmetto Electric Cooperative for her project titled, “Stride Track, Running Club.”
