University of Georgia College of Education professor Cory Buxton has co-edited a new activity book for elementary and middle school teachers titled, Place-Based Science Teaching and Learning: 40 Activities for K-8 Classrooms.

Buxton, an associate professor in elementary and social studies education, serves as the middle school education program coordinator for his department.

The book includes 40 classroom-ready science teaching and learning activities.  It provides teachers with a rationale and set of strategies, and activities for teaching science in a local context to help students engage with science learning and come to understand the importance of science in their everyday lives. Buxton co-edited the book with Eugene Provenzo.

Buxton published another book earlier this year titled, Outlines & Highlights for Teaching Science in Elementary and Middle School, and a report in February titled, Natural Philosophy: As a Foundation for Science Education in an Age of High-Stakes Accountability.

He has also co-authored a book on enhancing science learning for all students, Diversity and Equity in Science Education: Research, Policy, and Practice (2010).

Buxton joined the UGA faculty in 2008. He received his Ph.D. in science education from the University of Colorado.
