Barnett

Communication Studies major Joshua Trey Barnett spent the summer learning how to pursue interdisciplinary research with the guidance of College of Education faculty member Corey Johnson.

Barnett was among a group of 35 University of Georgia undergraduates awarded 2011 summer fellowships by UGA’s Center for Undergraduate Research Opportunities. The students spent the summer gaining investigative experience in a faculty-guided research environment.

“CURO Summer Fellows have the benefit of an intensive, immersive research opportunity, and through interaction with each other, they discover how research is approached in different disciplines,” said David S. Williams, associate provost and director of UGA’s Honors Program and CURO. “We are grateful for the strong support of the faculty members who mentored the students this summer.”

Johnson, an associate professor in recreation and leisure studies guided Barnett in his  project which focused on collecting and sharing the narratives of serious drag performers to better understand the experiences and issues most important to them as expressed in their own words. After graduation, Barnett would like to pursue a career in academia focused on rhetorics of social movements.

Participants in the CURO program earn academic credit for their summer work and are invited to submit their research for presentation at the CURO Symposium, the annual undergraduate research event held each spring at UGA.

The 2011 CURO fellowships were sponsored by UGA’s Office of the Provost, Office of the Vice President for Instruction, Office of the Vice President for Research, the Alumni Association, the Honors Program, and the Jane and Bill Young Summer Research Fellowship.
