APA president Melba Vasquez presents the APA's 2011 Award for Distinguished Contributions to Psychology in the Public Interest to UGA counseling psychology professor Edward Delgado-Romero.
University of Georgia counseling psychology professor Edward Delgado-Romero has received the American Psychology Association’s prestigious 2011 Award for Distinguished Contributions to Psychology in the Public Interest. Only one of these early career awards is given nationally each year.
As this year’s recipient, Delgado-Romero presented an address at the annual APA convention and wrote an article for the field’s top journal, American Psychologist. The award was presented by APA president Melba Vasquez at the group’s annual meeting in August.
Delgado-Romero, a professor in the College of Education’s department of counseling and human development services, researches racial/ethnic issues in psychology and has applied multicultural psychology to clinical practice. His research and scholarship are considered essential to the development of psychology professionals, according to those in the field.
Delgado-Romero has won numerous awards throughout his career. But since joining the UGA faculty in 2005 he has been named a fellow of the APA in two divisions (Society of Counseling Psychology and Society for the Psychological Study of Ethnic Minority Issues), been elected president of the National Latino Psychological Association and twice named Faculty Member of the Year by the Counseling Psychology Student Association from 2006-08. He received the Distinguished Early Career Award from the National Latino Psychological Association in 2006 and the Emerging Professional Award from Division 45 in 2006.
Delgado-Romero received his Ph.D. in counseling psychology from the University of Notre Dame.
