Larry McCalla, a master’s student in the College of Education’s Learning, Design and Technology program, has been invited to participate in the University of Georgia Graduate School’s Emerging Leaders program.
Held each fall, the two-day professional development workshop is designed for master’s and doctoral students who are nearing completion of the terminal graduate degree in their discipline and want to strengthen their leadership capabilities.
The program features sessions that focus on leadership skills necessary for entering a workplace characterized by diversity of people, career opportunities and ever-increasing responsibilities. Participants will gain insight and information to help them address their own career goals, understand workplace complexities, and become effective leaders in their disciplines.
Other than his attraction to the constructionism and constructivism epistemologies that frame the program, McCalla said he applied for the program to learn how to combine technology with sound learning theory, in order to create better learning environments. He anticipates learning new skills that enhance working with others. “The prospect of meeting this group and the leaders is the most exciting expectation,” he said.
The workshop is held annually during UGA’s Student Fall Break, which this year is from Oct 27-29, at Unicoi State Park in North Georgia.
McCalla, who expects to graduate in spring 2012, manages a small company based in Greenville, S.C., called SBI, Inc., which provides commercial rental properties to clients. He hopes to work in the e-learning/instructional design industry or pursue a Ph.D. in the Learning, Design and Technology program after earning his master’s degree.
McCalla received his A.B. in English from UGA in 1992.
