Reminder and program posted for Bob Hart’s 9/11 Memorial Trail

Hart, who retired from the College of Education in 2002, taught in the department of instructional technology and was director of the college’s Center for Educational Technology.

Just a few reminders from retired COE faculty member Bob Hart about the 9/11 Memorial Trail Ceremony this Sunday, September 11, 2011.

It will start promptly at 6:30 PM.

Please park on the street along Morton Farm Lane or in the field across the street from the Trail, 360 Morton Farm Lane.  It will be marked and there will be plenty of parking.

If you have ambulatory issues, let the folks at the table at the entrance to the driveway know. You can get out of your car there and someone will park your car for you or you can park at the house and walk down to the Trail from there.  (It is a short walk.)

There will be 25 men from Phi Kappa Theta fraternity at UGA to assist anyone who needs help walking the Trail.

The weatherman is predicting partly cloudy skies with a very slight chance of rain, 78 degrees and  43% humidity.  We will conduct the Ceremony rain or shine.

9/11 Memorial Trail – Athens, GA
September 11, 2011 – 6:30 PM

 1.   When you arrive please sign the visitors’ log and feel free to walk the trail at your leisure.   (Complimentary water and insect repellent are available at the entrance to the Trail.)

2.   Around 6:10 PM, Charlie and Nancy Hartness will begin playing contemplative, acoustic string band music.

Please start gathering in the flag area near the paintings of “Faith, Hope, and “Love” around 6:20.

At 6:30, a bell will ring 9 times by Doc Eldridge who was mayor of Athens on 9/11/2001.

3.   Opening comments by Bob Hart

4.   Pledge of Allegiance led by the Girl Scouts of Oglethorpe County, Georgia    (Please join in.)

5.   Star-Spangled Banner sung by Marty Winkler

6.   David Matthews-Morgan will lead us in song.  Everyone is encouraged to sing.

(America the Beautiful,  America,  God Bless America,  This Land is Your Land.)

7.   A short narrative about Adam White, Terry Munson, LeRoy Homer, Jr., and Charles Falkenberg,  Leslie Whittington, Zoe Falkenbeg and Dana Falkenberg, all killed on 9/11, will be read by Allen Rowell,  Terrell Austin, Mike Smith and Bryn Adamson.

8.   A bell will ring 11 times.  Please begin moving to different poles around the Trail.  Charlie and                    

      Nancy Hartness will play Coleman March while everyone walks to one of the 99 poles of your choice. Spread out so each pole has a reader.

9.   A bell will ring once.  Please start reading the names on the pole where you are standing.  If you are at a  pole by yourself, please read all the names.  If there are several people at your pole, take turns  reading the names.  It’s OK if a name is read more than once.  Just make sure all the names are read.

10.   After the reading of the names, please remain where you are for a moment of silence while we wait to make sure all the names are read.

11.   A bell will ring once and Will Jourdain will play Taps.

12.   The ringing of the chimes.  After 10 seconds of silence the chimes will ring for 20 seconds.

 13.   We will finish by singing Let There Be Peace on Earth.
