UGA Study Abroad program makes TV news in Russia

Powell looks at drawings by summer camp youth in the early days of teh UGA Study Abroad in Russia program.

The University of Georgia Study Abroad program in Russia in which students serve as counselors in summer youth camps in the Mari-El Republic, was featured recently on El-Mari News television broadcasts.

Gwynn Powell, associate professor in recreation and leisure studies and head of the program based in UGA’s College of Education is featured in the report along with UGA students Sarah Irwin of recreation and leisure studies, Collin Montgomery of marketing and Shauna Taylor of social work.

Nine UGA students are participating in the program , now in its seventh year, which runs from June 7 to July 11.

Asked what was different this year, Powell said, “More and more children are speaking English.  And we have expanded to a new camp called Druzba, which means friendship.”
