Allison Hill (BSEd ’98), an 8th grade science teacher at Crestwood Community Middle School in West Palm Beach, Fla., achieved National Board Certification from the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards (NBPTS) in 2010.

Hill has taught for 14 years, the last dozen at Crestwood Middle Schools. She taught for two years at Garrett Middle School in Cobb County before moving to Florida.

Hill, who earned her bachelor’s degree in middle school education at UGA, is science education department chair at Crestwood. She has also taught a multi-level science remediation course for students that were not successful during the original quarter.

In addition, Hill has taught an Accent Reduction class to adult students that have learned to speak English and want to try to speak English more clearly as well as computer courses for three years in the evenings at Forest Hill Community High School.

A voluntary assessment program designed to develop, recognize and retain accomplished teachers, National Board Certification is achieved through a performance-based assessment that typically takes one to three years to complete. While state licensing systems set basic requirements to teach in each state, National Board Certified Teachers (NBCTs) have successfully demonstrated advanced teaching knowledge, skills and practices.
