Professor Emeritus of English Education Hugh Agee dies

University of Georgia Professor Emeritus William Hugh Agee of Saratoga Springs, N.Y., died on March 13 after a long illness.

Agee was a faculty member in the College of Education’s  department of language education for 29 years, teaching literature and poetry, and mentoring student teachers before retiring in 1998. Agee was warmly regarded by hundreds of beginning and professional English teachers with whom he worked over the years.

During his career at UGA, he served on a number of key committees at the university level and the College of Education. He also served as acting head of the former Reading Department from 1992-93. He was a longtime member of the National Council of Teachers of English and served as president and secretary of the Assembly on Literature for Adolescents and as associate editor and editorial board member for The ALAN Review. H was editor of High Interest, Easy Reading (1984) and published numerous articles and book chapters on teaching literature to adolescents.

Before joining the UGA faculty, Agee was Director of Freshman English at Western Kentucky University. He earned his Ph.D. in English at Florida State University. He completed his bachelor’s and master’s degrees from East Carolina University.

He is survived by his wife, Jane Murray Agee; his four children, Beth Agee Saye and William Agee Jr., of Cordele; John Agee of Gardiner Me., and Natalie Trusdell Gbbon of Charlotte, N.C.; his sister, Nancy Lewis of Petersburg, Va.; his grandson, Ryan Saye of LaGrange and several nephews.
