A new competency assessment toolkit that improves the evaluation of students and psychologists at all stages of professional development, co-authored by a counseling psychology professor, was recently published.

The toolkit, co-developed by Linda Campbell, director of the Center for Counseling and Personal Evaluation, and Nadine Kaslow, of Emory University, provides a variety of assessment measures to help evaluate the principal foundational and functional knowledge and skills required of competent psychologists. The toolkit is introduced in an article titled “Competency Assessment Toolkit for Professional Psychology,” published in the journal, Teaching and Education in Professional Psychology (2009, Vol. 3, No.4).

“Competency-based assessment in psychology is consistent with the current zeitgeist in education more broadly and in education in the other health professions more specifically,” said Kaslow. “Having a thorough, thoughtful and comprehensive approach to assessment will increase the chances that training programs are producing competent psychologists.”

Campbell is a member of the American Psychological Association’s Board of Educational Affairs, the APA Council of Representatives, and the Georgia State Board of Examiners of Psychology.
