Mathematics Education for PreK-5 Teachers at the University of GeorgiaOn June 26, 2008 the National Council on Teacher Quality released a report titled “No Common Denominator: The Preparation of Elementary Teachers in Mathematics by America's Education Schools.” Download the Executive Summary and the full report. In this report, the University of Georgia was identified as a provider of “exemplary” preparation for elementary school teachers in mathematics. We have prepared this page to provide information about our program for those who are interested in learning more. The program at the University of Georgia prepares teachers for certification to teach grades PreK-5, which is referred to as “early childhood” in Georgia. The program is housed in the Department of Elementary and Social Studies Education. Each semester 60 students are admitted to the program in 2 cohorts of 30 students. Every third semester one of these cohorts has a PreK-2nd grade emphasis, and 15 of the seats are reserved for students from the College of Family and Consumer Science.
