National Association of Industrial and Technical Teacher Educators
Executive Committee Telemeeting
Tuesday, September 16, 1997
1:00 pm EST

Presiding..........Sam Stern, President

Participating: Mike Dyrenfurth, Jeff Flesher, Dennis Herschbach, Roger Hill, Ted Lewis, Jim Lorenz, Gregory Petty, Frank Pratzner, Sam Stern, Tom Walker, Chester Wichowski

1.0 Secretary's Report..........Roger Hill

    1. Minutes for meetings at AVA 1996 and the May telemeeting were distributed electronically and have been published in the NAITTE News and Views as well as on the World Wide Web site.
    2. A new officer’s list is being prepared and will be distributed electronically when the minutes of this meeting go out. Corrections include a new address for Treasurer Jeff Flesher and the appointment of Dr. Chester Wichowski by Sam to serve as Vice-President for Trade and Industrial Education following the death of Dr. Nevin Frantz.
    3. The latest version of the handbook will be distributed electronically. Any additional changes should be noted and sent to Roger Hill prior to the NAITTE Executive Committee meetings at the 1997 AVA convention.
2.0 Treasurer’s Report..........Jeff Flesher
    1. Jeff reported that association finances were in reasonably good condition. Some monies might need to be withdrawn from contingency funds to cover costs of the next journal printing. Should this be necessary, only a small amount is anticipated to be needed and the status of the budget is consistent with what would be expected at this time of the year.
2.2 Nevin Frantz left $5,000 to NAITTE in his will. Conditions attached to this gift are that it be used to establish an endowment for the advancement of the profession and that a matching amount of $5,000 be raised by the membership within a five-year period. Nevin was aware of previous discussions about establishing a foundation for NAITTE and this action on his part is perceived as catalyst for getting this activity moving.

3.0 Membership Update..........Jim Lorenz

    1. Jim Lorenz reported that current members numbered about 330. The last renewal notice for the year has been sent out and he expects about 270-280 to submit renewals. Some new members are being recruited as well and it is anticipated that membership for the year will be 300-350.
4.0 AVA Conference Planning..........Mike Dyrenfurth
    1. Letters have been sent to all parties involved in the AVA program for 1997. Officers should have received copies of that mailing.
    2. A first draft of the program was received from AVA and that will need to be returned within about 10 days to note any corrections needed. Executive meeting times were noted and all officers encouraged to attend.
    3. One or two corrections were noted on the materials officers had in their hands and those were passed along to Mike. Mark was still listed as chair of the research committee, but correction was made to indicate Joan Friedenberg as chair of that committee.
    4. Mike requested that all presenters send an abstract or summary of their sessions so that he could produce a flier to be distributed at the sessions to attendees. Also Sam noted that Mark could put materials on the homepage if desired.
5.0 Trustee Report - Elections..........Dennis Herschbach
    1. Nominations have been solicited for the officer terms being concluded this fall. These include President-Elect, Vice President for Technical Education, Vice-President for Industrial and Military Training, Secretary, and Trustee.
    2. The slate of candidates includes Ted Lewis and Susan Olson for President-Elect, Greg Petty and John Scott for Trustee, Dan Brown for Vice President for Technical Education, and Dennis Tesolowski for Vice-President for Industrial and Military Training.
    3. Dennis is working to finalize the ballot by October 1.
    4. It was again noted that Chet Wichowski would serve the remaining year of Nevin Frantz’s term as Vice-President for Trade and Industrial Education.
6.0 Trustee Report - Awards..........Frank Pratzner

6.1 Frank reported that three nominees had been submitted for the Sylvius Wolansky award. All appear to be viable candidates.

6.2 Rod Custer handles all of the JITE related awards.

6.3 Tom suggested that Dennis contact Cal about plaques as soon as election results are in. It was noted that Cal has provided through his estate for ongoing award of plaques and appreciation for this should be sent to Cal. Dennis should also send information on Chet to Cal.

7.0 Publications..........Sam Stern

    1. Messages sent from Rod Custer indicate that the JITE is moving along smoothly. As always, submission of manuscripts is encouraged.
    2. Jim Gregson is preparing a News & Views newsletter to come out before AVA. A message from Sam will be in the newsletter and also an article in memoriam of Nevin Frantz.
    3. The deadline for any News & Views newsletter materials is October 1. Please send hard copy or disk directly to Jim Gregson as electronic transfer is not working well for him right now.
8.0 Other Items of Business.........Sam Stern
    1. Greg Petty raised the issue of involving younger professionals in the organization, especially through officer positions. Consideration will be given to forming a group to look at ways of encouraging this type of involvement.
    2. Tom Bell, the new editor for the Industrial Teacher Education Directory, indicates that progress is going well on the next edition of that item.
    3. The first executive meeting at AVA will provide some opportunity to review progress over the past two years. In particular the satellite meetings, formation of the foundation, and being aware of new members and their involvement would be potential topics to be discussed. All officers are encouraged to participate.
    4. Sam will send a note about the officer report format to be used for materials being prepared for distribution at AVA. It will consist of ½ page of summary and ½ page of goals for next year. An example will be included with the materials Sam will send.
9.0 Meeting adjourned at 1:40 pm EST.

Respectfully submitted,
Roger B. Hill
Secretary
