Presiding: Sam Stern, President
Present: Rod Custer, Mike Dyrenfurth, Jeff Flesher, Nevin
Frantz, Jim Gregson, Dennis Herschbach, Roger Hill, Ted
Lewis, Jim Lorenz, Greg Petty, Sam Stern, Tom Walker
1.0 Welcome and Introductions . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .Sam Stern
1.1 New officers were introduced.
2.0 Summary of Procedures and Overview of Goals
2.1 Sam Stern explained pattern for Executive Meetings with
old business being addressed at first meeting and new
business dealt with at last meeting.
2.2 Strategies to draw more of the membership into
involvement were discussed. Expanding membership was
also mentioned. One of the vehicles for this will be
the NAITTE home page on the World Wide Web. New
officers will be added to the page and mailto links
added so that messages to committee chairs can be
facilitated.
2.3 Officer responsibilities were summarized. The newest
trustee is responsible for conducting elections for the
coming year so Dennis Herschbach will chair the
Nominating Committee. The Awards Committee will be
chaired by the senior trustee, Frank Pratzner.
3.0 Research Committee Activities
3.1 Jeff Flesher reported on activities of the research
committee. The TED/NAITTE Research Symposium is being
revised for the coming year. Working with Mike
Daugherty, presentations will be divided into research
by students and by professional. Approximately $400-
$500 will be needed to support the student side of that
activity.
3.2 Discussion about the plans for revising the Research
Symposium continued. Nevin Frantz moved that a $500
stipend be provided for up to four recent graduate
students to present their work at the annual meeting,
to submit a manuscript to the JITE, to have an abstract
of their papers included on the NAITTE web pages, and
to participate in the TED/NAITTE Research Symposium.
Greg Petty seconded the motion. Sam Stern explained
what funds were available that might be used to support
this project. The research committee would be
responsible for managing the solicitation and selection
processes. The motion passed with one dissenting vote.
3.3 Sam Stern will contact Joan Friedenberg to inform her
of support for the activities being planned for
graduate student research presentations at the 1997 AVA
Convention.
3.4 Caution was urged in preparing the call for
participation of graduate students in the Research
Symposium to be sure that assumptions were not made
that papers submitted to the JITE would necessarily be
published.
4.0 Graduate Student Support
4.1 Further discussion about involvement of graduate
students and encouraging their participation in NAITTE
took place. Sue Olson is chairing a committee on
graduate students and might be of assistance in
considering further ways to support student
participation.
4.2 Possibilities for providing travel expenses to AVA or
assisting students who would present at AVA or
participate in significant ways were discussed but not
resolved at this point in the meeting.
4.3 Student involvement with committee work was suggested
as a further step to encourage their participation.
4.4 Mike Dyrenfurth suggested that information be shared
about nonmember students who would be eligible to be a
part of NAITTE, perhaps using the NAITTE home page.
4.5 Jim Gregson suggested a call for nominations for
students who could potentially be involved in NAITTE.
4.6 Rod Custer requested input on how a panel of junior
reviewers to work with JITE would be received. They
would provide one of the three reviews. Feedback to
the student reviewer would be included in the process.
4.7 Mike Dyrenfurth suggested that institutional members be
used to nominate students members who could work with
Rod Custer and the JITE. Sue Olson would be asked to
develop a list of all potential student members. Sam
Stern agreed to pass along that request to Sue.
4.8 Suggestions for people to help with graduate student
committee were requested by Sam Stern. Dan Brown at
Murray State, Paul Brauchle, Mike Daugherty, Frank
Hammonds, and Charlie Gagle were suggested. Sam
requested that any additional names of persons to serve
on graduate committee be forwarded to him.
5.0 Satellite Meetings
5.1 Efforts will be made to have meetings of NAITTE members
at other conventions this year. One would be at AHRD
Conference in Atlanta, March 6-9. Greg Petty will take
responsibility for these arrangements. The other
meeting will be at the ITEA Convention in Tampa, March
22-25. Ted Lewis will take responsibility for arranging
a time for NAITTE to meet at ITEA. Arrangements will
include making an effort to have the NAITTE activities
listed in conference programs.
5.2 Mike Dyrenfurth suggested inviting a person who
represented the organizations where satellite meetings
would be held to discuss potential affiliations with
NAITTE. Also need to distribute brochures, but there
would be some cost associated with that.
5.3 Rod Custer indicated an interest in meeting with JITE
reviewers at the satellite meetings.
5.4 Sam Stern suggested keeping first experiences with
satellite meetings less intrusive and then working
toward expanded involvement.
6.0 NAITTE Brochure
6.1 The NAITTE brochure was discussed and the need for
revisions in it. In addition, everyone was encouraged
to consider new marketing strategies such as having a
materials table at NAITTE program sessions with copies
of the JITE, membership forms, and other information
for participants to pick up.
6.2 The secretary was asked to investigate printing options
for a new brochure. AVA printing mentioned at the
AVERA Business Meeting was a possibility. The number
of brochures needed would be 2000. Information about
the NAITTE home page on the WWW should be added to the
brochure.
6.3 Mike Dyrenfurth made a motion that up to $500 be
provided for preparing new NAITTE brochures. Second by
Jeff Flesher and motion passed.
7.0 Program for AVA 1997. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Mike Dyrenfurth
7.1 Questions were raised about whether NAITTE was over-
programmed at the conference. Should we go with fewer
sessions? Should we go with joint sessions with
divisions? Idea of doing something different with
breakfast, perhaps adding a half hour and including
NOCTI, and going with performance assessment as topic,
and then breaking apart for business meeting was
suggested.
7.2 Breakfast goes to VP for Trade and Industry this year
so Nevin Frantz will provide leadership for the
planning. Nevin will also serve as the liaison for
1997 AVA Convention programming, working with Ned
Swartz of the Technical Education Division.
8.0 Schedule for Telemeetings
8.1 Executive Committee telemeetings will be held on
February 13, May 1, and September 11 during 1997. All
will be at 1:00 pm EST.
9.0 Meeting adjourned at 10:15 am.
Respectfully submitted,
Roger B. Hill
Secretary
