Instructions for Creating a Certification Portfolio
- Include in your portfolio a copy of each of the artifacts listed below, together with a reflective, evaluative commentary, of approximately half of a single-spaced page in length for each one. At this point in your professional development, how do you now view each of these earlier efforts? What reactions do you have, if any, to the evaluative comments or suggestions provided by your Block I and II instructors/supervisors about those efforts?

- Compose an essay, of approximately 5 single spaced pages in total length, addressing the three issues listed below, in light of your knowledge of the 2003 NSTA Science Teaching Standards (available at www.nsta.org/pdfs/nstastandards2003.pdf), and especially upon reflection about your growth across the four or more semesters you have spent in the program:
- Of the “Big Ideas” about science teaching that you have been exposed to in the Program, which do you personally find most significant, powerful, and therefore of lasting importance in your current and future professional life? Which such ideas have you found to be distinctly less so? For both kinds of cases, why?
- Provide specific narrative examples from your practicum and student teaching experiences illustrating your point of view as expressed in #1. Include both particularly positive or satisfying experiences and negative or frustrating experiences.
- Based on the analysis in #1 and #2, describe some examples, both in general principle and some specific applications, of aspects of your teaching practice that you are committed to doing differently in the short-term and long-term future.
Summary/Reminder: length guidelines (shorter could be better, longer is not necessarily better)
