Guidelines for Nominations of
Outstanding SAETS Members for the
JOHN SHRUM AWARD FOR EXCELLENCE
IN THE EDUCATION OF SCIENCE TEACHERS

The Southeastern Association for Science Teacher Education (SASTE) invites nominations for the annual John Shrum Award for Excellence in the Education of Science Teachers. The award was established, with donations from private sources, to honor each year that individual among the SASTE membership whose contributions to science education best exemplify the high standards of dedication and service to science education that have distinguished the person for whom the award was named.

The John Shrum Award will be presented at the 2005 Conference in Athens, Georgia, October 15, 2005. Submission Deadline: September 5, 2005. The award carries a cash stipend of $300. Deadline extended to September 30, 2005.


Guidelines for Nominations

I. Nominations of SASTE members for the award should be typewritten, double-spaced, on letter-sized white paper.

II. The length should be four (4) pages maximum, excluding optional letters of support, and include the following information:

III. The nominee's name, institutional affiliation, address, office and home phone numbers.

IV. A brief biographical sketch;

V. A rationale for the nomination, with emphasis on how the nominee has excelled in contributions to the education of science teachers; and

VI. A discussion of the effect the nominee's contributions have had on science teachers and science teaching, with emphasis on the relevance to the theme of the 2005 SASTE Conference. Up to four (4) optional letters of support may be attached.

The candidate will be evaluated on the basis of the information in the materials indicated above. Three (3) copies of the materials, stapled in the upper left-hand corner, must be received at the following address by September 5, 2005.

Nominations s may be submitted by e-mail to tkoballa@uga.edu no later than September 5, 2005. The nominations should be in Word (doc) or rich text format (rtf) attachments please.

Please include "JOHN SHRUM AWARD NOMINATION" in the subject.

The recipient(s) of this award will be expected to attend the conference to present a 6-8 minute synopsis of their position paper. In the event of multiple authorship, authors will share the award.
