Mathematics Education

Master of Arts in Teaching Degree Program (M. A. T.) for Secondary School Mathematics Teachers (Grades 6-12)

This degree program leads to certification as a secondary school mathematics teacher and is intended for individuals holding a bachelor´s degree in mathematics or a related field with a strong mathematics background. Admission to the program requires completion of at least 2 semesters of calculus as well as passing or exempting GACE I. All certification requirements, including those that are not specifically part of the degree program (e.g., undergraduate courses) must be satisfied before the degree will be awarded.

Educational Psychology: 3 hours
Typically EPSY 6800 or EPSY 6010

Curriculum and Instruction: 11-12 hours
EMAT 6360 Teaching and Learning Secondary School Mathematics
EMAT 7360 Secondary School Mathematics Field Experience
EMAT 7080 Curriculum in Mathematics Education
EMAT 6990 Research Seminar in Mathematics Education (two 1-hour registrations) or EMAT 6950 Professional Seminar in Teaching Mathematics

Teaching Field: 6 approved courses in MATH, STAT, EMAT
Examples include: MATH 6000, 6010, 7200, 7210, STAT 6070, 6210, 6220, EMAT 6450, 6550, 6650, 6500, 6600, 6680, 6690, 6700

Note: As a general rule, MATH 7001, 7002, 7003, 7020, 7030, and 7035 cannot be used in the teaching field. Similarly, EMAT 6410, 6420, 6360, 7360, 7460, and 7700 generally cannot be used in the teaching field.

Note: The total number of mathematics content courses from the bachelor´s, masters, and courses taken for certification must be at least 17.

Research: 3 hours
Typically ERSH 6200, 6300, or 6600

Field Experiences: 10 hours
Each candidate must complete 10 hours of supervised field experience, either through student teaching (EMAT 7460) or an internship (EMAT 7700).

Additional requirements:

  • Written comprehensive exams must be passed.
  • All candidates must meet certification requirements. These requirements may necessitate taking courses beyond those needed for the MAT (e.g., SPED 2000). See http://www.coe.uga.edu/mse/math/programs/certification.html for a list of these requirements.
  • All candidates must obtain a passing score on GACE II test to be eligible to apply for certification.
