Mathematics Education

Graduate Program Information

The Mathematics Education Program offers 5 graduate degrees: the MAT (Master of Arts in Teaching), MEd (Master of Education), MA (Master of Arts), EdS (Specialist in Education), and PhD (Doctor of Philosophy). All 5 degrees are offered on the Athens campus and are geared toward people with an interest in the teaching and learning of mathematics in grades 6-12. The MEd and EdS are also offered on the Griffin campus and are geared toward people with an interest in early childhood (preK-5) or middle grades (4-8) education. We also offer a graduate certificate in mathematics education for those pursuing a PhD in mathematics who wish to learn more about mathematics education.

Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT)
The MAT degree is intended for those holding a bachelor’s degree in mathematics or other field with a strong mathematics background. The degree is designed to lead to certification for teaching mathematics in grades 6-12 in Georgia at the T5 level. The program combines a depth of study of mathematics with the study of mathematics education, educational psychology, and research. The program requires 36 hours of coursework, 10 hours of student teaching or internship (for a total of 46 hours), and a written comprehensive examination.

Master of Education (MEd)
Athens: The MEd degree is intended for those who are certified as school mathematics teachers and who wish to enhance their knowledge of mathematics education. The program combines a depth of study of mathematics with the study of mathematics education, educational psychology, and research. The program requires 38 hours of coursework and a written comprehensive examination.

Griffin: The MEd degree is intended for those who are certified as elementary school teachers, middle school mathematics teachers, or special education teachers and who wish to enhance their knowledge of mathematics education. The program combines a depth of study of mathematics with the study of mathematics education, the psychology of learning, and research. The program requires 36 hours of coursework, including an internship in mentoring, and a comprehensive portfolio documenting learning and its impact on instruction.

Master of Arts (MA)
The MA degree is designed for students with a strong mathematics background and a background in secondary mathematics education. The program of study requires six content courses (at least 3 of which must have a MATH prefix), courses in curriculum and instruction, educational psychology, research and a thesis, for a total of 32 hours.

Education Specialist (EdS)
Athens: The EdS degree is designed for experienced secondary school mathematics teachers who wish to further their study of mathematics education. The program of study is planned as a logically organized whole, taking into account courses completed in the master’s degree program. Completion of a project is a program requirement.

Griffin: The EdS degree is designed for experienced elementary school and middle school mathematics , and special education teachers holding a master’s degree who wish to further their study of mathematics education. The program involves the completion of 33 hours of coursework, including an applied project.

Doctor of Philosophy (PhD)
The PhD degree is designed for those with a strong background in both mathematics and mathematics education who wish to be leading researchers in mathematics education. The degree combines graduate level study of mathematics and mathematics education with work in qualitative and quantitative research methodology and other supporting fields as appropriate to the person’s area of interest. Comprehensive written and oral examinations as well as original research presented in a dissertation are required.
