Mathematics Education
Certification in Secondary School Mathematics
(For Candidates Holding a Bachelor's Degree)
Mathematics (UGA numbers listed)
- Two courses in calculus. MATH 2200 and MATH 2210.
- A total of 11 mathematics teaching field courses. (Teaching Field can include MATH, STAT, or some EMAT courses)
- In the 11 courses, there must be at least 8 upper division (post-calculus) courses including the following:
a. At least one course in Linear Algebra (MATH 3000)
b. At least one course in College Geometry (MATH 5200 or MATH 7200)
c. At least one course in Modern Algebra (MATH 4000 or MATH 6000)
d. At least one course in Statistics (STAT 4070 or STAT 6070)
e. At least one course in Instructional Technology (EMAT 4680 or EMAT 6680)
Professional Education
- Two courses in educational foundations (EFDN 2030, EPSY 2020, EPSY6800, ERSH 6300)
- One course on the nature of exceptionality (SPED 2000)
- At least two courses on curriculum and instruction in mathematics (EMAT 4500, EMAT 4360, EMAT 6360, EMAT 7050, EMAT 7080)
- Student teaching, Internship, or teaching experience (EMAT 5460, EMAT 7460, or EMAT 7700, 10 to 15 hrs)
Combining Initial Certification with a Master of Education degree
The certification studies and the studies for the Master of Education degree in mathematics education can be combined. The following points need discussion with an advisor and demand careful planning.
- At the end of the Master of Education degree, the candidate will have a total of 17 mathematics teaching field courses, satisfying the topic areas described in the mathematics section above AND at least 6 of them must be for graduate credit.
- With careful advisement, most of the professional education requirements can be done at the graduate level within the Master of Education program. Course work needed for certification that can not be fit into the M. Ed. program will be additional hours. In particular the SPED 2000 is not available for graduate credit and there is room in the program for up to 6 semester hours of student teaching/internship. Normally 10 semester hours are earned for certification.
It is possible to complete the Master of Education degree before certification requirements (e.g. internship) are completed. On the other hand it is also possible to complete certification before the M.Ed. requirements are completed.
