TEACH TO LEARN TEACHER RESIDENCY PROGRAM

Graduate students in mathematics and science education have the opportunity to apply to be teacher residents in a new program announced by the Clarke County School district-University of Georgia Professional School District Partnership. Twelve graduate assistantships will be offered to candidates who are qualified and will commit to the two-year residency. Click here for details.

Kilpatrick Elected to National Academy of Education

Regents Professor of mathematics education Jeremy Kilpatrick is one of 10 newly elected members of the National Academy of Education. An internationally recognized expert in mathematics curriculum and policy, and a National Associate of the National Academy of Sciences, Kilpatrick is the first faculty member from UGA to be elected to the NAEd.

Doctoral Student Gerri Cole Receives Scholarship

Gerri Cole received the inaugural Michael A. Johnson Scholarship, which was established in memory of Michael A. Johnson, former Associate Dean of the UGA graduate school. The purpose of this scholarship is to recognize an outstanding doctoral student from an underrepresented group who has demonstrated excellent leadership qualities. One award of $1,000 is given annually.

Alumnus Michael Patterson Named Presidential Awardee

Michael Patterson (M.Ed. ’98)

Michael Patterson (M.Ed. ’98), who teaches geometry and trigonometry at Advanced Technologies Academy in Las Vegas, received the Presidential Teaching Award in mathematics representing the state of Nevada. The Presidential Award, one of the nation’s highest honors for teachers, is given annually to the best pre-collegiate-level science and mathematics teachers from across the country. Two winners from each state are selected by a panel of scientists, mathematicians and educators following an initial selection process done at the state level.

2009-2010 Hooten Award Winners Announced

The Joseph R. Hooten Award for Excellence in Mathematics Education is given each semester to a student teacher demonstrating exceptional promise as a secondary school mathematics teacher. The award was created in honor of the retirement of Professor Joseph R. Hooten, who was a faculty member at UGA from 1965-1986. Dr. Hooten was first and foremost dedicated to his students. The Hooten Award winners for 2009-2010 are Bonnie Turner (fall 2009) and Karla Heath (spring 2010).

2009-2010 Butts Award Winner Announced

Joe Conti, a high school science teacher in Oglethorpe County was named the 2009-2010 recipient of the David P. Butts Award. Established in 1997, the Butts Award is given in to a graduate of the science education program in recognition of distinguished contributions to the field in teaching, research, or service.
