The purpose of this scholarship is to recognize an outstanding doctoral student from an underrepresented group who has demonstrated excellent leadership qualities. One award of $1,000 is given annually.]]></description>

<p>Michael Patterson (M.Ed. ’98), who teaches geometry and trigonometry at Advanced Technologies Academy in Las Vegas, received the Presidential  Teaching Award in mathematics representing the state of Nevada. The Presidential Award, one of the nation’s highest honors for teachers, is given annually to the best pre-collegiate-level science and mathematics teachers from across the country. Two winners from each state are selected by a panel of scientists, mathematicians and educators following an initial selection process done at the state level.</p>

Hooten Award for Excellence in Mathematics Education is given each semester to a student teacher demonstrating exceptional promise as a secondary school mathematics teacher. The award was created in honor of the retirement of Professor Joseph R. Hooten, who was a faculty member at UGA from 1965-1986. Dr. Hooten was first and foremost dedicated to his students. The Hooten Award winners for 2009-2010 are Bonnie Turner (fall 2009) and  Karla Heath (spring 2010).</p>
