Academic Programs - Mathematics Education
Athens: The Master of Education (M.Ed.) degree program is intended for those who are certified as secondary school mathematics teachers and who wish to enhance their knowledge of mathematics education. The program combines a depth of study of mathematics with the study of mathematics education, educational psychology, and research. The program requires 36 hours of coursework. In addition, the student must meet all general requirements, including a final written comprehensive examination, listed in the Graduate School Bulletin for the professional master’s degree.
Griffin: The Master of Education degree program is intended for those who are certified as elementary school teachers, middle school mathematics teachers, or special education teachers and who wish to enhance their knowledge of mathematics education for teaching grades P-5 or 4-8. The program combines a depth of study of mathematics with the study of mathematics education, the psychology of learning, and research. The program requires 36 hours of coursework, including an internship in mentoring, and a comprehensive portfolio documenting learning and its impact on instruction. ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS
We base admissions decisions on a variety of factors including past performance in course work, especially mathematics course work, GPAs in past degree programs, entrance exam scores, and letters of recommendation.
The Graduate School requires a minimum 3.0 grade point average in your undergraduate degree.
The Graduate School requires minimum Graduate Record Examination (GRE) scores of 140 (new scale) or 400 (old scale) quantitative and 146 (new scale) or 400 (old scale) verbal. In recent years, students admitted to our master’s degree programs have earned an average quantitative score in the low 700’s (old scale) and an average verbal score near 500 (old scale). The approximate corresponding percentiles are 65th to 70th for quantitative and 50th to 55th for verbal. We also accept the Miller Analogies Test (MAT).

Note: As a general rule, MATH 7001, 7002, 7003, 7020, 7030, and 7035 cannot be used in the teaching field. Similarly, EMAT 6410, 6420, 6360, 7360, 7460, and 7700 generally cannot be used in the teaching field.

Course selection must have the approval of a Mathematics Education faculty advisor.
All candidates must pass a comprehensive written examination.

APPLICATION INFORMATION
To apply, go to the online application. Application deadlines are posted here. After you apply, you will receive an email from the Graduate School with a link to a tracking screen, which you will use to monitor our receipt of your application materials. Please retain this email as there is no other way to access the link (we do not have it and therefore cannot give it to you).
In addition to an application, you will need to provide:
- 3 letters of recommendation. You will identify your letter writers and their email addresses when you apply, and they will receive an email from the Graduate School asking them to complete the form online. Choose recommenders who know your academic work well and can speak to your capacity to engage in graduate level study of mathematics, to perform well in courses requiring high levels of reading and writing, to work as a classroom teacher, and to be successful in a graduate program. Do not solicit “character references” from friends, family, or people you know socially.
- Transcripts. You must submit 2 official (sealed) transcripts from every higher institution you have attended, except the University of Georgia. The address for submitting transcripts to the Graduate School is:The University of Georgia
