Department of Mathematics Education established.

Joseph HootenJoseph R. Hooten joined the College of Education faculty from Florida State University. He is a graduate of Columbia University.

1966

College of Education Reorganization.
Len Pikaart assumed the position of Department Head.

1967

Leslie SteffeLeslie P. Steffe joined the Department of Mathematics Education.  He is a graduate of the University of Wisconsin

Robert Willcutt joined the Department of Mathematics Education.  He is a graduate of Indiana University.
The Conference on Needed Research in Mathematics Education was held at the Georgia Center for Continuing Education. Papers published in the inaugural issue of the College’s new Journal of Research and Development in Education; Dr. Joseph Hooten served as the conference director and journal editor.

1968

James  WilsonJames W. Wilson joined the Department of Mathematics Education.  He is a graduate of Stanford University.

Larry L. Hatfield joined the Department of Mathematics Education.  He is a graduate of the University of Minnesota.
Mike Mahaffey and Joe Hooten had joint appointments with the Department of Elementary Education.

1969

Len Pikaart resigned as Department head to pursue full time teaching and research.
James W. Wilson was appointed as Department Head and Graduate Coordinator.
Robert Willcutt resigned to move to Boston University.

1970

Mary Ann Byrne joined the Department of Mathematics Education.  She is a graduate of Purdue University.  This brought us to a level of 10 faculty in the Department of Mathematics Education plus Edith Robinson in the Mathematics Department.

George StanicTwo other mathematics education faculty were added to the Department of Elementary Education:  George Stanic and Laurie Hart Reyes were both graduates of the University of Wisconsin.

Len Pikaart moved to an Endowed Chair in Mathematics Education at Ohio University.

1975

Jeremy KilpatrickJeremy Kilpatrick joined the Department of Mathematics Education from Columbia University.  He is a graduate of Stanford University.

1976

Mary Ann Byrne moved to the University of Southern Mississippi.
Sigrid Wagner joined the Department of Mathematics Education.  She is a graduate of New York University.

1984

Alphonse BuccinoAlphonse Buccino was named dean of College of Education with academic appointment in mathematics education.

1986

Joe Hooten retired. The Hooten award for the outstanding undergraduate to prepare for mathematics teaching was created in his honor.  This annual award continues and a plaque in the office identifies the awardees from 1986 to present.
Bill McKillip took leave from the department to become the Department Head in Elementary Education. His academic appointment remained in Mathematics Education.

1990

Sigrid Wagner moved to Ohio State University.
Bill McKillip returned to the department.
Patricia Wilson received COE Teaching Excellence award.
NSF-supported LITMUS (Leadership Infusion of Technology in Mathematics and Its Uses in Society) Teacher Enhancement project with over 225 K-12 teachers from Greene and Elbert County Schools [co-PIs included Drs. Hatfield, Olive, C. Henry Edwards (Mathematics), and Jim Schultz (Ohio State University); Janet Tomlinson served as the Project Coordinator; over the years over 10 Graduate Assistants were supported to work on the project.

1991

Creation of the Learning and Performance Support Laboratory, Jim Wilson as acting director. A permanent director was named in 1994.

1992

Beatriz d’Ambrosio joined the Department of Mathematics Education from the University of Delaware. She is a graduate of Indiana University.

1993

Jim Wilson resigned as department head and graduate coordinator to pursue full time teaching and research.

Beatriz d’Ambrosio moved to Indiana University Purdue University Indianapolis.

James Wilson receives Lifetime Achievement Award from National Council of Teachers of Mathematics.

2002

Patricia Wilson is the Director of The Center for Proficiency in Teaching Mathematics (CPTM). CPTM was awarded to UGA by NSF. The Center is a collaborative effort with the University of Michigan and school partners. It aims to strengthen the system of professional education that supports teachers of mathematics throughout their careers. CPTM develops ideas, materials, and approaches to improve:

  • Professional development for mathematics teacher educators and professional developers
  • Doctoral programs for future mathematics teacher educators
  • Professional development for teachers of mathematics
  • Knowledge about the unique nature of mathematics as it is used in teaching
Hosted Annual Meeting of the North American Chapter of the International Group for the Psychology of Mathematics Education (PME-NA). Denise Mewborn served as program director.

2003

Jeremy Kilpatrick received Lifetime Achievement Award from National Council of Teachers of Mathematics.

2004

College of Education Reorganization. Merger of mathematics education and science education to create The Department of Mathematics and Science Education.

Andrew Izsák received Early Career Award from the Special Interest Group for Research in Mathematics Education of the American Educational Research Association.

2005
