Overview of the Dept.

LLED prepares high-quality educators for teaching and leadership positions in K-12 schools. Faculty in this department help shape the theory and praxis that guide

  • children’s and adolescent literature and language arts education
  • reading education
  • English education
  • world language education
  • bilingual education
  • English to speakers of other languages.

Through its doctoral programs, the department also prepares the next generation of scholars and researchers in literacy and related fields. Students work with faculty from a variety of research traditions who have been recognized nationally and internationally for their expertise.

Faculty conduct, present, and publish research on a variety of topics, including critical literacy, social construction of literacy, situated learning, children’s and young adult literature, second language acquisition, foreign language acquisition, discourse analysis, in addition to other research methodologies, and teacher preparation.
