The Teaching Additional Languages (TAL) program encompasses Foreign Language Education (FLE) and Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL). The program advances additional language learning and teaching in Georgia through K12 certification in foreign language education andan ESOL endorsement that includes course offerings online and in Costa Rica. The program also offers masters, educational specialist, and doctoral programs to prepare future TESOL and foreign language educators and researchers for work in the U.S. and abroad. The program offers two courses, LLED 7768 and LLED 7769, that prepare International Teaching Assistants for classroom teaching at UGA.

The program in English Education certifies teacher candidates at both the undergraduate and master’s degree levels; provides programs of study for master’s degree students; and supervises research at the specialist and doctoral levels. Faculty members integrate teaching, research, and service to cultivate theoretically sound and practically applicable knowledge in each student’s degree program.

The Children’s Literature and Language Arts program offers M.Ed., Ed.S, and PhD degrees as well as preparing preservice teachers to teach language arts and to incorporate children’s literature throughout the curriculum. The goals of the program include critical discussion and applications of theory, research, and innovative practices in oral and written language, and literature for young people. The program sponsors the Georgia Children’s Book Award programs, the annual Conference on Children’s Literature, and the Red Clay Writing Project.

The Reading Education program prepares doctoral students for both university and school positions requiring advanced degrees. It also prepares preservice and inservice teachers to teach reading to students from pre-kindergarten to grade twelve. Four degrees are offered: M.Ed., M.A., Ed.S., and Ph.D. Through a range of face-to-face, blended, and online courses, the program seeks to engage learners in a critical dialogue of the ways theory, research and practice transact in literacy classrooms. The program also supports a Reading Clinic, a Reading Endorsement, opportunities for studying abroad, and the Red Clay Writing Project.
