How to Apply

Please read the following information carefully and follow instructions.

Applications for our program are made to the Graduate School.

Please visit the Graduate School website for application forms and important information. From that site, you may print and mail the application, apply online using a credit card, or ask the Graduate School to mail you an application.

Part of your application should be sent directly to the Graduate School. This includes:

  • application form and fee
  • 2 official copies of transcripts from all institutions attended
  • official scores from GRE

You will need to indicate a "major code" on your application. The major code forthe Ph.D. in Language and Literacy Education is "822."

The rest of your application should be sent to the Graduate Secretary in the Department of Language Education. This includes:

  • at least 3 letters of recommendation
  • statement of purpose (background information, specific interests in doctoral study, career goals)
  • vita
  • 1-3 sample(s) of scholarly writing

Entrance Requirements

1. undergraduate GPA of 3.0
2. graduate GPA of 3.5
3. GRE score of 1,000
4. 3 letters of recommendation
5. 1-3 writing samples
6. statement of purpose
7. master's degree in related field
8. 2 years of appropriate professional experience
9. for international applicants who are non-native English speakers, TOEFL scores of 25 or better on all 4 subtests of speaking, listening, reading, and writing
10. We consider all materials and the interview, when possible, in making decisions. A single indicator would not necessarily disqualify an applicant.

Application Deadlines

Applications are reviewed by admissions committees in four areas: Children's Literature & Language Arts, English Education, Foreign Language Education, and Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL). Please identify on your application which committee you would like your application to be considered by and follow these deadlines:

Children's Literature & Language Arts - Applications are reviewed when files are complete.

English Education - Applications are reviewed when files are complete from September 1 through April 30. (Applications received during the summer will be reviewed after September 1.)

Foreign Language Education - Application deadlines are November 15, January 1, and April 1.

Reading Education--Applications are reviewed when files are complete from September 1 through April 1. (Applications received during the summer will be reviewed after September 1.)

TESOL - Application deadlines are November 15, January 1, and April 1.

Applicants should allow 6-8 weeks for all materials (test scores and transcripts are slow to arrive) to be received. International applicants should allow up to three months.

Your application must be complete by January 1 in order to be considered for financial aid or an assistantship.

If you are seeking financial support from the department or graduate school (an assistantship, tuition waiver, or university fellowship), you will also need to fill out and submit a separate financial support application. This form must be printed and mailed directly to the Department of Language Education (not the Graduate School).
