The Literacy Coach Emphasis in Language and Literacy Education

  • is for teachers who are currently literacy coaches or who wish to become Literacy Coaches
  • can lead to either a Masters of Education, Educational Specialist, or Doctoral degree with additional coursework (consult your advisor)
  • will focus on the following themes across courses
    • differentiating instruction
    • building on cultural and linguistic diversity as a resource
    • creating communities of practice
    • critiquing, selecting, and using quality programs and materials including software; designing professional development for materials in the curriculum
    • using technology as an instructional tool
    • supporting field-based learning with coaches in diverse educational settings through face-to-face and online discussion
    • providing leadership for literacy program development and instruction

Admission Requirements

  • Minimum of 4-5 years PreK-12 literacy teaching experience
  • Masters degree or some graduate work preferred
  • 3 letters of recommendations with at least one from a person who is familiar with your literacy teaching and leadership potential (instructional coach, principal, assistant principal, teacher) and one university professor (if possible)
  • Statement of Purpose for Admission to Literacy Coach Emphasis that includes teaching experiences, leadership experience, work with colleagues, professional interests, and at least one example of literacy teaching (e.g., a unit plan, teaching journal, or other curriculum work)
    • Important: be sure to head your statement as shown in bold

Admission Process

  • If you are already in a graduate program in Language and Literacy Education, meet with your advisor and apply to have this as your emphasis.
  • If you are not already admitted to the University of Georgia and the department of Language and Literacy Education, (go to http://www.coe.uga.edu/lle/ ). Apply for the desired graduate program (MEd, EdS, EdD, or PhD) in one of these program areas:

Literacy Coach Emphasis

You may select either an elementary or secondary literacy coach specialization. The program consists of 9 courses (27 hours) that include a 6-course (18 hour) Core component and a 3-course (9 hour) Specialization component. The Specialization will prepare teachers for literacy coaching at either the Elementary or Secondary level. Teachers completing the program also receive the PSC Reading Endorsement. Youmay build your coursework into an M.Ed., Ed.S., Ed.D, or Ph.D in most instances; check with your advisor. If you have taken any of these courses in the past 5 years, you may not need to repeat the course, but can instead choose other related courses for the graduate degree.

Requirements for Completion of M.Ed. or Ed.S. with LC Emphasis

  • Additional courses for a total of 12 for M.Ed. And 10 for Ed.S.
  • Approved program of study and other learning experiences
  • Electronic portfolio
  • Action research course: either a special section of ELAN/READ 7650 or EDEC/EDMS 8010 Action Research
  • Action research project related to literacy coaching

Requirements for Completion of Ed.D. or Ph.D. with LC Emphasis

  • additional coursework, comprehensive exams, dissertation, and other doctoral requirement to be developed with your advisor
