Graduate Programs

Welcome prospective students!

We are pleased that you are interested in a graduate program in the Department of Language Education at the University of Georgia (UGA as it is commonly known). We are confident that you will find a challenging and satisfying graduate education here.

Please take some time to review information on the Language Education website. It should answer most of your questions about our programs.

The Department of Language Education offers master's and educational specialist programs at the master's and specialist levels in the following areas: Children's Literature and Language Arts, Secondary English Education, Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL) and Foreign Language Education

We also offer a doctoral (Ph.D.) program in Language Education with concentrations in these areas and opportunities for interdisciplinary study.

Directions for applying to each of these programs are found under each of the program descriptions. You will not need to request any additional materials to be sent by mail. Please read and follow these directions carefully.

Be sure to use application deadlines on our Department website rather than those listed by the Graduate School. Some programs in Language Education have rolling deadlines (applications are reviewed whenever they are complete) and others have fixed deadlines. If you are applying to a program with a fixed deadline, submit materials as soon as possible. Test scores and transcripts are often slow to arrive and your application cannot be reviewed unless all materials are received by the deadline. U.S. applicants should allow six to eight weeks for all materials to be received. International students should allow two to three months.

You may also apply for financial support from our website. Please note that applications completed by January 1 will be given priority.

If you still have questions after reviewing our website, please contact us with questions, requests for individual assistance, and to arrange appointments and campus visits.
