Students seeking financial aid (assistantships, tuition waivers, or university fellowships) must submit completed applications by December 31.

Financial aid application
(Please print and mail to the Department of Language Education, 125 Aderhold Hall, University of Georgia, Athens, GA 30602.)

Several types of awards are available. Please check on the Application which type(s) you are eligible for and might accept:

  • Language Education Teaching Assistantships
These provide tuition and salary. While doctoral students are given priority in assistantships, highly qualified master's and specialist's students may be competitive. Experience teaching in U.S. public schools is highly desirable for these assistantships.
  • Tuition waivers
These allow applicants who are not residents of the state of Georgia to attend UGA at in-state rather than out-of-state tuition rates. Applicants must have at least a 3.50 graduate grade point average and/or a 3.30 undergraduate grade point average and a combined score of 1100 on the GRE. Awards are made initially for the Fall semester and can be renewed the following spring and summer. UGA has a fixed number of tuition waivers to grant each year so early application is very important. Students seeking tuition waivers are strongly encouraged to apply for admission by November 15. The application deadline is April 1. Only complete applications will be considered. Notification of awards will be made as soon as possible.
  • Graduate School University-Wide Assistantships
Several types of University-Wide Assistantships are available:
    1. University-wide Assistantships
These are available to graduate program applicants with strong credentials -- distinctive achievements, GRE scores of at least 1300 (verbal and quantitative), a 3.50 grade point average or higher, and/or excellent letters of recommendation. Students must apply for admission by January 15. The award pays tuition, fees, and a stipend. Students work with department faculty on research and teaching. This is a 2-year award. Students are nominated by the department for these awards based upon information supplied by applicants.
    2. Graduate School Dissertation Completion Fellowships
These are available to Ph.D. students who have demonstrated exceptional achievement since admission to the program. Credentials such as GRE scores used for admission are not considered. This award also pays tuition, fees, and a stipend. The student cannot work and is expected to devote full attention to completing the dissertation. Students are nominated by the department for these awards based upon information supplied by applicants.
    3. Presidential Graduate Fellows Program
This program aims to recruit exceptionally qualified students to our graduate programs. The awards will be for multiple years of support with an annual stipend of $20,000 and all tuition (except $25 per semester). Students entering UGA with a bachelor's degree will be guaranteed up to five years of funding, and students entering with a master's degree will be guaranteed up to three years of support contingent on satisfactory performance and progress toward degree completion. In addition to being engaged in research and graduate studies on a full-time basis (12 months), the recipients are expected to participate in special activities designed to enhance their professional development. Only citizens and legal permanent residents of the United States are eligible to receive this Fellowship. Students are nominated by the department for these awards based on information supplied by applicants.
    4. Graduate Recruitment Assistantships (GRO)
The GRO Assistantship is designed to include any entering graduate student who is considered first generation, educationally or economically disadvantaged, or has some aspects of a uniquely diverse background that adds to their discipline of study. The award pays tuition, fees, and a stipend. Only citizens and legal permanent residents of the United States are eligible to receive this award. Students are nominated by the department for these awards based on information supplied by applicants.
