Research Interests

My primary research interests lie in the sociocultural, economic, and political dimensions of children's literature. Currently, I am continuing my exploration of way changes in the structure of ownership of the children's literature industry are affecting the kinds of books being published and found in schools, classrooms, and homes.

Courses Taught

I teach survey courses in children's literature at the undergraduate and graduate and levels (e.g., ELAN 3310, 6310) and a graduate course called "Children Literature in the Curriculum (ELAN 7310) that both surveys children's literature and explicitly addresses issues related to literature in the classroom. I also teach a split-level class called Culturally Diverse Children's Literature (ELAN 5318/7318) and a doctoral seminar entitled "Race, Class, and Gender in Literature for Young People" (ELAN 8310).
