This program prepares students to teach English language and literature in middle and high school (grades 6-12). Students earn T-4 (initial) certification to teach in Georgia public schools. Students must apply to this restricted major.

The following program of study has been required of students enrolled through 2005-6.  We are in the process of revising the program to account for changes in the COE Area F requirements and additional changes decided by the faculty.

Pre-admission

Prior to admission, students need to have completed the following course work:

Area A-Essential Skills (9-10 hrs)

  • ENGL1101, ENGL 1102 or 1102M, MATH 1101

Area B-(4-5 hrs--program requirement)

  • 1st semester of Foreign Language

Area C-(6 hrs)

  • 2 Humanities/Fine Arts req.

Area D-(10 hrs.)

  • Biological Science
  • Physical Science
  • Lab for BS or PS &
  • approved math, science, or technology class (preferably EDIT 2000)

Area E-Social Sciences (12 hrs)

  • 4 courses (2 depts)-recommend POLS1101 and HIST 2111 or 2112 to pass the Georgia constitution examination

Area F courses (21-24 hrs)

Students take appropriate English department courses in each of the following areas:

  • Language study
  • British Literature
  • American Literature
  • 20th Century Literature
  • Shakespeare

Students are required to take the following COE courses:

  • SPED 2000
  • EFND 2030
  • EPSY 2020 or 2020H

Praxis I or SAT combined >1000

Fall of Senior Year

LLED 4400 Teaching as Planning in Context (3 hours)

LLED 4410 Adolescent Literature (3 hours)

LLED 4420 Teaching Writing (LLED 4450 next year)    (3 hours)

LLED 4030 Reading Methods    (3 hours)

LLED 4460 Supervised Field Experience (3 hours)

Spring of Senior Year

LLED 5460 Student Teaching  (12 hours)

LLED 4462 Student teaching seminar  (3 hours)
