Admission Selection Process
Students who meet the following minimum expectations will be considered for admission to the major:
- 2.6 overall GPA (note that the average GPA for admitted students is 3.5)
- Passing score on Praxis I exam or exemption based on SAT or ACT score
- COMPLETION OF AREA F COURSES NO LONGER IS REQUIRED FOR ADMISSION
Students who qualify for consideration may apply by submitting the following to the department:
- Transcript (include GPA)
- Purpose statement (not to exceed 5 pages) explaining why you want a career in English teaching
- Documentation of experiences working with learners (coaching, counseling, tutoring, mentoring, etc.) that include names and phone numbers of people who can vouch for the candidate
- A resume listing work experiences relevant to a career in education (experiences requiring teamwork, communication skills, planning, organization, etc.), extracurricular activities that highlight special interests or talents that are relevant to a career in education (drama, dance, debate, journalism, athletics, travel, etc.) and any academic awards or honors
The English Education faculty will meet annually to review applications from students who meet the minimum requirements. A candidate’s performance in each of the four categories above will be rated using a four-point scale. Admission will be granted to those applicants with the highest overall ratings.
Application Deadline
January 15 for sophomores and November 1 for juniors.
Additional applications will be considered if space is available.
Admission is Conditional
Once admitted to the major, candidates must maintain a 2.6 overall GPA and in teaching field course work, complete an additional 40 hours of documented field experience with learners, complete Area F and 6 (of 7) required teaching field courses prior to Fall semester of the senior year.
Appeal Process
The student may submit a letter of appeal within 7 days of denial explaining reasons s/he should be admitted. The chair of the English Education program will convene an Ad Hoc committee to reevaluate the admissions decision.
The student will be notified by March 1st.
