Masters Programs - FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: What is the difference between the M.Ed. and the M.A.T. degrees?

Students who already have teaching certificates should seek the M.Ed. degree. These students will take core LLED classes and 4 – 5 classes in the target language. Students who need to earn their teaching certificates should enroll in the M.A.T. program.  These students will take core LLED classes, 4 – 5 classes in the target language, additional classes necessary to earn the T-5 Certification in teaching, and complete a one-semester practicum  and a one-semester student teaching experience.  This information is also available on the program planning sheets online

Q: When do I need to apply?
The deadline for application for spring semester is November 15th and for fall semester is January 1st.

Be sure to use these deadlines rather than those from the Graduate School. Your application will not be reviewed unless all materials are received by the deadline. U.S. applicants should allow 6-8 weeks for all materials (test scores and transcripts are slow to arrive) to be received. International students should allow even more time (2-3 months) — therefore, it is extremely important that international students use the web for information and applications.

Q:  Do I need to take comprehensive examinations as a part of this program?

Athe end of your program, you will present a portfolio showcasing the work you have done over the course of the entire program. Follow the link to find more information on the Portfolio and the presentation:  http://tinyurl.com/3p97a8o

Q: I am a Masters student. Do I need to write a thesis?

You will take two Research Methods Classes (LLED 7070 in Spring and LLED 7655 in Fall). In these courses you will conduct a qualitative research study and write a research report.

Q: As an MAT-FL student I need 4 – 5 classes in my foreign language. Can you recommend some classes to take?

Foreign Language courses are offered in two broad categories: Literature/Culture and Linguistics. You may take any class that interests you. We recommend that if you have not had any prior classes in linguistics, you should take classes that cover various subjects in linguistics, such as “Linguistic Theory and Analysis” or “Applied Linguistics,” rather than courses dedicated to one subject, such as “Phonology” or “Syntax.”  If you are MAT-Spanish, you may take LLED 7506 Spanish Children’s Literature offered by Dr. Cahnmann-Taylor.  It is up to your advisor if you may make substitutions.

Q: Is there any alternative for taking the Research Methods courses?

The research experience is a fixed requirement and you are urged to take the year long sequence.  Exceptions are for students actively working under the guidance of a TESOL & World Language Faculty member on an aspect of research where the faculty member agrees to mentor you through the research process, meaning you may be able to substitute one or both courses.

Q: Are there jobs available for Masters Students through the department?

There is very little state funding for graduate assistance at the department and very few Masters students are funded.  If individual faculty receive grants or have special projects, it is possible you may receive funding.  However, official state funding is usually reserved for doctoral students only.  There are jobs available throughout the college and university and we encourage you to seek out opportunities and to let faculty know you are interested in positions as they come available.
