Masters Programs - M.Ed.


M.Ed. in TESOL & World Language Education with specialization option in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL)

 

Students in the TESOL specialization seek advanced professional preparation and study in teaching English as a second or additional language to children, adolescents, or adults in the U.S. or abroad. The program includes coursework in the areas of English language study, literacy, cultural awareness, and research methods. A wide range of program offerings and electives accommodates individual student needs and interests.

Objectives:

  • Knowledge of the target language linguistic system, differences and similarities among languages, and the principles of language acquisition and multilingualism
  • Knowledge of sociocultural contexts and cultures associated with the target language and how these shape language learning
  • Ability to design, implement, and manage content-based language instruction in accordance with local and national standards, and to use materials and technology effectively
  • Knowledge of premises and issues concerning language assessment, and ability to use and interpret assessments
  • Conversance with research in and history of the field of applied linguistics, TESOL, or world language education; and ability to engage in professional development and advocacy in TESOL and world language education

Please note: The M.Ed. program does NOT provide initial certification to teach ESOL (English to Speakers of Other Languages) or world languages in U.S. public schools. If you are seeking initial certification to teach in Georgia K-12 schools, please see information on the “MAT” program.

The M.Ed. program consists of 36 credit hours or 12 courses.
