Master of Education in Reading Education (M.Ed.)
The M.Ed. degree in Reading Education is a 36 semester-hour, non-thesis program designed primarily for Kindergarten through Secondary School teachers who are interested in becoming stronger and more capable literacy teachers.

Program of Study for the Master of Reading Education (M.Ed.) Degree
Courses that complete the program of study for the M. Ed, other than those specifically required, are mutually agreed on by students and their advisors.
Area A – Educational Foundations (minimum of 9 hours)
Selected courses from Language and Literacy Education, Social Foundations, African American Studies, Anthropology, Psychology, Sociology, Educational Psychology, or Women’s Studies qualify as Foundation courses. Students should consult with their advisors when selecting such courses.
Area B – Reading Core (minimum of 12 hours)
LLED 6010 Survey of Reading Instruction Pre-K through Grade 12
LLED 6020 Practicum in Reading Instruction and Assessment (Clinic)
LLED 6420 Literacy Development and Instruction in Early Childhood
Plus one of the following courses.
LLED 6030 Teaching Reading in the Secondary School
LLED 6060 Content Area Literacy
LLED 6070 Middle School Reading
Area C – Specialization Electives (minimum 12 hours)
These are courses focused in an area of literacy study, for example multicultural classroom, adolescent literacy, special needs students. Students should consult with their advisors when selecting such courses.
Area D – Research (minimum of 3 hours)
We recommend ESSE 7500 or 7500e, Action Research; LLED 7070, Research Methods in Language Education; LLED 7732, Classroom Discourse
Completion of the COE Multicultural Requirement
Completion of a Reflective Essay as fulfillment of the UGA Comprehensive Examination requirement.
