Masters Programs


Master of Education in English Education, Reading Education (Reading, Writing, Children’s Literature and Digital Literacies focus area), and TESOL and World Language Education: For experienced teachers already holding T-4 certification, the Master of Education (M.Ed.) is a professional degree designed primarily to enhance the student’s knowledge and skills in one of the following focus areas: Secondary English Education  , TESOL and World Language Education , or Reading, Writing, Children’s Literature and Digital Literacies . The M.Ed consists of 36 semester hours (normally 12 courses) of graduate credit.  Although the program may be pursued on a full-time basis, all required courses are scheduled during weekday evening hours during the academic year or weekday hours during the summer, in order to accommodate the schedule of the great majority of students who pursue this degree part-time while continuing to hold a full-time teaching job.

Master of Arts in Teaching (M.A.T.) in English Education and World Language Education: For students with a background in the language arts or closely related fields but not yet holding T-4 teacher certification, coursework leading to certification to teach grades 6-12 in a secondary education field: English Education   or World Language Education  can be pursued at the graduate level, T-5 certification. This degree program consists of 36 semester hours of coursework, plus student teaching totaling another 12 hours.

This program presumes an undergraduate major in English or Foreign Language. Those with degrees in other related fields may need to complete additional required coursework at the advanced undergraduate level before being admitted to the MAT.

Online M.Ed in Reading Education: The University of Georgia’s Online M.Ed. in Reading Education with an emphasis on new and digital literacies is specifically designed to meet the needs of certified teachers who are unable to pursue face-to-face coursework in Athens. The goal of the program is to educate teachers in ways that advance their students as readers in the broadest sense from printed materials to digital multimedia environments. The online M.Ed. consists of 36 semester hours of graduate credit. It is appropriate for teachers working with students from Pre-kindergarten through grade twelve. The degree program operates on a cohort model, and admits 20 students.
