Doctoral Program - How to Apply

Applications are reviewed by admissions committees in three focus areas:
- English Education
- Reading, Writing, Children’s Literature & Digital Literacies
- TESOL & World Languages Education
Please identify on your application which committee you would like to consider your application.
To apply for admission to the PhD in Language and Literacy Education you will need to :
- complete an application form available from the UGA graduate school arrange for all relevant transcripts to be sent to the graduate school. Please note: you will be required to submit GRE scores as part of your application to the graduate school. The Department of Language and Literacy Education recommends a total verbal plus quantitative score of at least 1000 (for GRE tests taken before August 2011) or a score of 297 (for GRE tests taken after August 2011) but will consider GRE scores in light of the merits of the entire application package.
- As you apply online via Graduate Admissions, you will be asked for 3 email addresses for Recommenders (i.e., letters of recommendation). Admissions will contact the recommenders to submit letters of recommendation online for your application.
- You also will need to submit a purpose statement describing your background and your reasons for wanting to pursue a PhD degree. If you have particular research interests, we would like to hear about those as well. Please submit a Statement of Purpose via email/resume via email attachment to Becky Hendren, bhendren@uga.edu
- Finally, we need to see at least one example of scholarly writing from you. Please send a brief writing sample to Becky Hendren, UGA/COE, Language & Literacy Ed. Department, 315B Aderhold Hall, Athens, GA 30602
Applications will be reviewed three times each year after the following submission deadlines: October 1, January 1, and April 1.
Applicants should allow 6-8 weeks for all materials (test scores and transcripts are slow to arrive) to be received. International applicants should allow up to three months.
Your application must be complete by January 1 in order to be considered for financial aid or an assistantship.
