Guidelines for the Visiting Scholar Program

PURPOSE:
The faculty in the Adult Education Program is honored that adult education colleagues from around the world choose to spend time studying in Georgia. Our program has a long history of hosting visiting scholars, and we find that the new perspectives on adult education that these scholars bring to our program enrich our intellectual climate and prove instructive for faculty and students alike. In order to ensure that colleagues have a productive and enjoyable experience during their time in Georgia, we limit the number of Visiting Scholars we will officially approve for any given time period. Below you will find answers to commonly asked questions about the Visiting Scholar Program.

HOW DO I APPLY FOR THE VISITING SCHOLAR PROGRAM?
Applications for the program should be made in the form of a letter addressed to any member of our faculty. A current vitae should be enclosed with the letter. The letter should specify the proposed dates of the visit and what you hope to accomplish during your time in Georgia.

HOW ARE APPLICATIONS FOR THE VISITING SCHOLAR PROGRAM REVIEWED?
Copies of the application letter and vitae are shared within the faculty. During the next available faculty meeting (these meetings are held monthly during the academic year), the full faculty discusses the application and votes on it. If the majority of the faculty approves the application and if a member of the faculty agrees to serve as “faculty sponsor” for the applicant, the application is approved.

WHAT DOES THE FACULTY SPONSOR DO?
The faculty sponsor provides the planning and logistical support necessary to ensure that the Visiting Scholar has a productive and enjoyable visit. The sponsor communicates with the Visiting Scholar prior to the visit in order to: (1) provide any letters and endorsement the Visiting Scholar needs to obtain funding for the visit, (2) complete the forms necessary for any required visas, (3) help plan transportation to Athens, and (4) assist in locating appropriate housing. The sponsor also assists the scholar in gaining access to the intellectual resources of the university, including the library and faculty members with relevant specialties.

WHAT SUPPORT DOES THE PROGRAM PROVIDE TO VISITING SCHOLARS?
Unfortunately, the program is unable to provide any direct financial support to Visiting Scholars. In the past, many scholars have been able to obtain support from their home institutions or governments and some have elected to come at their own expense. The department supports Visiting Scholars in the following ways:

  • The program will arrange library access and cover limited copying and telephone expenses
  • Visiting Scholars are invited to visit regularly scheduled classes and seminars offered by our faculty
  • Faculty members will make themselves available for informal, personal consultations with Visiting Scholars
  • The program will attempt to provide office space and computer access for Visiting Scholars; however, due to budgetary restrictions, we cannot guarantee these items.
Visiting Scholars are expected to locate and pay for their own housing; however, the faculty sponsor will assist in making local contacts.

WHAT DOES THE PROGRAM EXPECT OF THE VISITING SCHOLAR?
There are no official expectations for how the Visiting Scholars use their time while in Georgia. Typically, Visiting Scholars will be invited to conduct one or two public seminars on topics of their choosing during their visit.

CAN VISITING SCHOLARS BRING FAMILY MEMBERS WITH THEM?
Absolutely. Athens is a very pleasant, small city, and there are many opportunities for family-oriented cultural and recreational activities. Please see
