The final version of the common-core standards for math and English/language arts, released in June by the Council of Chief State School Officers and the National Governors Association, contain two educational blind spots that, if ignored, can undermine not only the quality of public education, but also the strength of our democracy, writes William G. “UGA adult education student, Austin Browne, named National Graduate Scholar” |

Linda Martin, a doctoral student in Adult Education was awarded the Louise Seaman Bechtel Fellowship in January 2009. This fellowship provides a $4,000 grant to a qualified children’s librarian to spend a month or more reading and studying at the Baldwin Library of the George A. Smathers Libraries, University of Florida, Gainesville. The Baldwin Library contains a special collection of 85,000 volumes of children’s literature published mostly before 1950. Linda, who was named Georgia’s Library Media Specialist of the Year in 2007, plans to collect stories to illustrate national standards in science, social studies, and math. |

| Juanita Johnson-Bailey, professor of Adult Education, among those recognized at the University of Georgia’s Honors Day program on Wednesday, April 7, 2010. Johnson-Bailey is a recipient of a Meigs Distinguished Teaching Professor, the university’s highest recognition of superior instruction at the undergraduate and graduate levels.

| Judith Preissle, qualitative research professor in the department of lifelong education, administration, and policy, is one of two women faculty to be honored with the 2006 Women’s Studies Award from the University of Georgia Institute for Women’s Studies.
The award honors those who have made significant contributions to women’s studies at UGA and to the lives of women on campus. |
