Leadership by Being There

The effective educational leader fosters optimal conditions for educators to solve curriculum and instructional problems and to enjoy continued growth of professional competence. The following principles of conduct, enacted in concert with each another, can foster such conditions. While at this time these principles enjoy only an experiential base, a research base for similar habits of conduct can be found in the work of Rensis Likert.

  1. Be there
  2. Listen
  3. Take people from where they are
  4. Attend to "little things"
  5. Follow through in a timely fashion
  6. Seek genuine input
  7. Use input genuinely
  8. Articulate ideals
  9. Maintain clear expectations
  10. Provide candid, sound reasons for imperative directives
  11. Offer constructive criticism
  12. Foster favorable conditions for risk taking
  13. Offer encouragement and praise
