    ------------------------------------------------------------------------

This section identifies those resources that will be of specific interest to the student in Adult Education. There are many resources available throughout the University for all students. The Graduate School Bulletin and/or the University Student Handbook should be referenced for more information on University-wide resources.

Libraries

Students enrolled in any of the programs in the Program of Adult Education have access to the volume of learning resources available through the University Library System. The university has three major libraries on the campus: Main, Science, and Law Libraries. In addition, there is a small collection of adult education works located in the Georgia Center for Continuing Education.

The UGA Library is the largest university library in the state of Georgia. The University is also part of the Galileo network of databases and e-journal resources. The library staff is very resourceful and available to assist you with orientation to the use of the library as well as assisting with any day-to-day learning needs. For further information on the types of services available through the library, contact the Main Reference Desk in the Main Library at (706) 542- 3251 or at www.libs.uga.edu

It is highly recommended that all new students go to a library orientation. There are several sessions held at the beginning of every semester and during the summer. This orientation will help you to become familiar with the various databases and resources of the library.

Students are also encouraged to set up a time for a Reference Conference with the library. This is an individual session that will help you to focus on your particular area of interest and provide you with the tools and the databases that will be most helpful for your research topic.

  1. Card Catalogue: GIL
  2. Library Password
  3. Renewing books online
  4. Other helpful hints
  5. Electronic Databases: GALILEO
  6. Web Searches

A short tour of the library and electronic databases:

Gil: this is the card catalogue for the library. Clicking on this icon will allow you to see what books and periodicals the library owns as well as locate the book in the stacks and check on the status of the book. A quick tour on using this catalogue can be found at http://www.libs.uga.edu/need/gilhelp1.html

  • Graduate students may check books out for 56 days and can renew the book twice.
  • If the book that you want has been checked out of the library you may recall the book at the website.

To recall a book go to the GIL catalogue and locate the book. Click on the title of the book and you will be shown a brief display of this book including the location, call number and status. If the book has been charged out, click on the request button at the top of the page to recall the book. The library will then notify you when the book is available for you to pick up.
  • If a book that you have borrowed has been recalled you will receive a notice in the US mail or via email with a new due date.
  • Password for off campus use of the databases and catalogue files of the library: In order to access the library files from an off-campus computer you will need the library password that changes every semester. You can obtain the password (even from an off-campus computer) by logging on to the main library website and selecting "Your Account". After you logon you will be able to request the current semester's password.

    * Renewing books on-line - Books can be renewed on-line by logging onto the main library website, selecting "Your Account" and logging on. Scrolling down the page of your account will give you a list of the current books that are checked out. The due date is located on the far right side of the screen. To renew a book, check the box on the far left of the screen. Scroll down and click on the renew button. The computer will then update your list with new due dates.

GALILEO Databases:

* In order to download a full text journal so that it looks like the original journal including page numbers you must select the "full text" or "page image option. This will require an Adobe Acrobat Reader. If your computer does not have this option it can be downloaded from the web. Please note that not all journals have this option. Therefore when citing a quote from a journal article you may need to go to the library to obtain the page numbers.

Web Searches:
The library has an excellent site to help you use the search engines on the Internet.

Making copies at the Library and at Aderhold
The most cost effective way to make copies is by using your UGA ID card.
Your UGA ID card or a copy card can be used for printing from the computer or at the copy machines at the libraries and at Aderhold.
You can add money on your card at the library at the machine by the first floor reference desk or at the Tate Center. Also you can purchase a copy card at the library from another machine near the machine for adding money to your card.
Please note that you can use cash for the copying machines at the library but it is about three cents higher than when you use a card. In order to print something from the computers you need to have a card at the libraries although you may use cash at Aderhold.

The Department Resource Center

The Department Resource Center is a small library collection within the Program in Adult Education, located in Room 416, River's Crossing. It contains books, periodicals, conference proceedings, and dissertations from the Adult Education Program. Students and faculty in the program have access to the resources and may check out these resources for their personal use.

It serves a variety of educational needs of adults including personal enrichment, professional development, personal/career counseling, preparation for entrance to a degree program, and credit /toward-a-degree courses through independent study or evening classes. The size, scope, and quality of the Georgia Center's programs make it a unique and valuable "laboratory" for students in the Department of Adult Education. The Georgia Center is located at the corner of Carlton and Lumpkin Streets. The phone number for the Library is (706) 542-2071.
