LIR CURRICULUM

LIR ACTIVITIES

Click the Current Newsletter link at right for details on course openings, travel/study and social activities, with registration forms.

The courses available to members of LIR at the University of Georgia are intentionally designed to include a wide variety of topics in order for members to find one or more classes of interest to them each semester. The course instructors are drawn from active and retired university faculty and other professionals. In addition to our courses, we also sponsor a lecture series combined with lunch. The lecturers are experts in their field, be it Dr. John Maltese on Jascha Heifetz, Dr. Corrie Brown on biological weapons, or Athens Mayor Heidi Davison on city and county issues.

LIR COURSES

Most courses run from two to six sessions and meet in the River's Crossing Building on College Station Road. Classes meet in the daytime, usually for two hours, and are scheduled throughout the semester to allow members to take several courses if they wish.

LIR has been able to attract some of the finest educators as instructors. Several faculty members have won the UGA Meigs Award for teaching (awarded to five or fewer faculty each year), others have held special professorships, still others have been senior administrators and department heads. All of them generously donate their time.

LIR members are not ones to be left behind in this world of technology.
Six new computer-related courses were offered in the Winter 2007 semester,
taught by three instructors. A new rotation of computer courses has been
added to the curriculum for each semester. Courses may vary from three to
five class sessions, depending on the instructor and course. Prerequisites
and skill levels will be given for each course.

Non-faculty instructors bring specific skills and expertise to the classroom. For example, the owner of an interior design shop offered a course on home decorating, and a local police captain taught a course on home and personal security.

Most of the Lunch and Learn lectures are held at the Athens Community Council on Aging, 135 Hoyt Street, on the north edge of downtown Athens. Reservation required; the cost is $15 per lecture/lunch.
