Application

Date Completed
  1. Apply for admission to the Graduate School on forms secured from the Graduate Admissions Office.

  1. Have copies of all undergraduate and graduate transcripts sent to the Graduate Admissions Office.
_______________

  1. Have one copy of your score in the Graduate Record Examination sent to the Graduate Admissions Office.
_______________

  1. Send three letters of recommendation, vita, statement of purpose and a sample of your writing to the Graduate Coordinator in the Adult Education program.
_______________

  1. Check that credentials are assembled, evaluated and then forwarded to the Doctoral Admission Committee. Applicants are interviewed by the Doctoral Admission Committee. The Department makes a recommendation on the applicant to the Graduate School.

Coursework
  1. During the first semester, begin selection procedures for major professor. (See section on Procedures and Advisement )
_______________

  1. Select a major professor.
_______________

  1. In consultation with the major professor, select an advisory committee.
_______________

  1. Through consultation with the major professor and the Advisory Committee, develop a final program of study.
_______________

Comprehensive Examinations

(See Guide to Comprehensive Examinations )
  1. Schedule and begin preparation for written comprehensive.

  1. Notify the Graduate School of the time and place of the oral comprehensive at least two weeks before the date of the examination.
_______________

  1. Notify the Gradate School on the approved form of the results of the comprehensive examination.
_______________

  1. Complete and submit a manuscript for publication by a refereed journal. Note: this is for the PhD program only. (See Guideline for Manuscript Submission )

Prospectus
  1. Complete prospectus; schedule time and place for prospectus hearing.
_______________

Candidacy
  1. Apply to the Graduate School on approved forms, for Admission to Candidacy no later than one full semester before the proposed date of graduation. All conditions for candidacy must be met before the application for admission to candidacy can be approved by the Graduate Studies Office.

Dissertation

Policy and Procedures for the Dissertation and the following items:
  1. Obtain dissertation formatting instructions.
_______________

  1. Prepare dissertation prospectus.
_______________

  1. Meet with Advisory Committee about the prospectus.
_______________

  1. Submit a copy of the dissertation to the major professor.
_______________

  1. Submit a copy of the dissertation to each Advisory Committee member.
_______________

  1. Schedule the oral defense of the dissertation with the committee.
_______________

  1. The results of the oral defense must be reported to the Graduate School by the major professor at least one week prior to graduation.
_______________

  1. Review options for electronic storage and access of your dissertation with your major professor.
_______________

  1. Submit copy of the dissertation to the Graduate School. Procedures on preparing a document and uploading it can be found at ETD Help

  1. Pay additional fee, if the dissertation is to be copyrighted or submitted to UMI for distribution.
_______________

  1. Complete all requirements for the degree and report to the Graduate School office at least one week before graduation.
_______________
