Student Procedures and Requirements
For the M. Ed. in Adult Education, M. Ed. in HROD degrees, and
Specialist of Education Degree (Ed. S.)
- Advisement Procedures
Advisement is the process whereby students secure an Advisor to assist and advise them through a program of study. Although the advisor will work with the student to ensure that all university, department, and program requirements are met, the program of study will be individualized according to the student's needs, background, aspirations, and interests. This individualization is allowed through some choices of elective courses in the program of study as well as through the emphasis and setting of the applied project and/or internship experiences.
More specifically, the purposes/role of the advisor at the Master's level are:
- To advise and clear each student for registration for each academic term.
- To assist students in the development of an appropriate program of study based on the current planning and advisement guide for a student's specific program.
- Work with and direct the student through the process of the applied project .
- Review a student's applied project prior to distribution to her/his advisory committee for the final oral defense.
- Attend to the paperwork needed for each student. Contacting all advisory committee members regarding the times of each oral examination; full committee attendance is required at the oral examination.
- To assist students in completing all of the requirements for obtaining the degree, including exit exams.
- Selection of Advisor
During the first semester of the student's enrollment, an Advisor is assigned to the student by the Graduate Coordinator. After appointment, the student has the option of requesting a change of Advisor by contacting the Department Head and requesting that a new Advisor be assigned.
- Graduate student's responsibilities
- Become familiar with the graduate student guidelines as published in the Graduate School Bulletin and the Program in Adult Education Graduate Student Handbook.
- Keep track of requirements, deadlines, and progress toward graduation.
- Initiate advising by making an appointment with the advisor and attending advising appointments prepared with the appropriate paperwork and planned possible schedules.
- Inform the advisor of interests, aptitudes, aspirations, or needs that will impact the design of the program of study.
- Choose the advisory committee. Distribute the Applied Project Report to committee members in a timely fashion. Committee members should have a least two weeks to read these documents.
