Adult Education

Doctor of Education Degree (Ed.D.)
(Current students enrolled in the program)

Purpose

The Ed.D. Program is designed to prepare students for careers as practitioners in leadership and teaching positions in organizations involved in the education of adults. All phases of the program from advisement to dissertation encourage and support the acquisition of advanced knowledge and skills for effective adult education practice.

Course work

There are eight major areas of coursework: adult education core, adult education electives, technology, other electives, research, reflective practice seminar, advanced doctoral courses, and post-candidacy coursework.

 
1. Adult Education Core (12 semester hours).
Students select EADU 8020 plus any other three of the remaining four courses.

  1. Adult Education Electives (6 semester hours)
    Courses should be selected through discussion with the student's major professor. A full listing of adult education courses are online.
  2. Technology Course (3 semester hours)
    Students must take EOCS 8000 or another course devoted to educational technology.

  1. Other Electives (6 semester hours)
    At least one of these elective courses must be taken in a department other than adult education. Courses should be selected through discussion with the student=s major professor.
  2. Research Course (12 semester hours)
    Research courses provide the student with the necessary background and skills to begin dissertation research. Twelve hours of coursework are required to complete this requirement. All courses are outside the department and at least one must be a statistics course (for example, ERSH 6300 or an equivalent) and one course (three semesters hours) not in statistics.
  3. Reflective Practice Seminar (3 semester hours)
    Students without significant work experience in adult education must take a practical internship prior to or in conjunction with this seminar.

  1. Advanced Doctoral Courses (6 semester hours)
    All students must take EADU 9630 and at least one semester of EADU 9640 after completing their core courses. A second semester of EADU 9640 is allowed but not required; a second semester of EADU 9640 may not be counted toward the minimum requirement for electives.

  1. Post Candidacy Course work (10 semester hours)
    After admission to candidacy, a student must be registered for at least two semesters. In order to graduate, a student must register for a minimum of 10 hours of credit and at least 3 hours of this credit must be EADU 9300. Because of the Department's continuous enrollment requirement (see next page), most students exceed the minimum .

Additional Requirements

In addition to the course work requirements described above, Ed.D. students must also fulfill the following requirements:

Residency Requirement:
Residency is satisfied by completing twenty-one consecutive credit hours (summers optional).

Comprehensive Examination:
Before beginning the dissertation process, students must demonstrate their preparedness by means of a month-long, take-home, written examination. The written examination is followed by an oral examination. The comprehensive examination process is described in detail in departmental, "Guide to Comprehensive Examinations for Ed.D. and Ph.D. Students in the Department of Adult Education."

Dissertation:
The Ed.D. program culminates in the preparation and defense of a dissertation. The dissertation is prepared under the supervision of the major professor and four other faculty committee members selected by the student.

Dissertation Submission:
The Graduate School requires disserations to be submitted in an electonic format. In addition, the Department requires students to provide a bound copy of the disseration to the Department library, to the major professor, and to any other committee member that requests one
