Adult Education
Specialist of Education Degree (Ed.S.)
Purpose
The Ed.S. program is designed to prepare students for careers as practitioners in positions and organizations related to the education of adults. All phases of the program encourage and support the acquisition of advanced knowledge and skills for effective practice in adult education. The specialist degree provides a professional education sequence for adult education practitioners to improve their abilities to work with adult students in a variety of areas such as adult basic education, technical and vocational programs and other adult education areas.
Admission Requirements
The faculty considers four factors in deciding whether to recommend an applicant for admission:
- Undergraduate Grade Point Average.
- Graduate Grade Point Average.
- Graduate Record Examination Score.
- Demonstration of interest in an applied career through an interview with the Graduate Coordinator.
Residency Requirements
There is no consecutive hour residency requirement for the Ed.S. degree. However, the degree must be completed within six years beginning with the first semester registered.
Course work
A minimum of 33 hours is required for the Ed.S. degree. There are five major areas of course work: adult education core, adult education electives, other electives, research, and field experiences. The course work for each area is described in greater detail below. In addition, students must prepare an Ed.S. Student Portfolio and complete a final oral examination.
