Applying for the Ph.D. in Educational Administration and Policy

APPLYING FOR THE DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY DEGREE IN THE PROGRAM IN EDUCATIONAL ADMINISTRATION AND POLICY

Purpose

The Ph.D. in Educational Administration and Policy is designed to prepare scholars and administrators who combine the expertise of the academic researcher with the perspectives of the public intellectual to advance the knowledge and practice of preK-12 educational administration and policy making.

Overview

As the first step of the graduate admissions process, applicants collect information about their prior academic experiences such as college and university transcripts, test results (GRE), and then have these materials submitted to the University of Georgia Graduate Admissions Office. The second step is to submit materials to the Program in Educational Administration and Policy. All of these materials are examined by the Admissions Committee in the Program in Educational Administration and Policy so that informed decisions can be made relative to admissions. Applicants are reminded that no decision about admissions can be made until all materials are received.

  1. As a starting point, please consult the Graduate School Homepage for application deadlines at http://www.uga.edu/gradschool/admissions/deadlines.html and allow ample time for transcripts to be sent to the University of Georgia. However, the applicant must also consult the deadlines established by the Program in Educational Administration and Policy (EDAP). Without exception, the Program in Educational Administration and Policy only admits students to begin the Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) during the fall semesters. For EDAP application deadlines, applicants can consult the EDAP Homepages at http://www.coe.uga.edu/leap/adminpolicy/about/index.html and at http://www.coe.uga.edu/leap/adminpolicy/phd/index.html

  2. Applicants must have a Master’s Degree in educational administration/leadership, education policy, the social sciences, or a related field to be considered for admissions to the Ph.D. in Educational Administration and Policy.

Step I: Materials to be submitted directly to the Graduate Admissions Office

The standard application package of the University of Georgia requires applicants to the Graduate School to send the following materials directly to the Graduate Admissions Office:

  • A completed Application Form.

Application must be made to the University of Georgia Graduate School Admissions Office at http://www.uga.edu/gradschool/admissions/requirements.html by completing the online application materials.

  • Official test score reports. The Graduate Record Exam (GRE) is required. For international applicants, the GRE in addition to TOEFL test scores sent by the testing agency are required.

The Graduate Record Exam

All GRE test scores are subject to a five-year time limitation, and the official posting of the GRE takes between four and six weeks.

The general test of the GRE is offered year-round as a computer-based test at centers worldwide. GRE subject tests are offered several times a year at numerous testing centers. Advance registration for tests is required. Information about the GRE can be obtained from the following source

  • Official transcripts from colleges and universities attended in the past.

The University of Georgia requires official transcripts from all college coursework sustained.Retrieve and print the Transcript Request Form available in the "Downloadable Forms" section of the online application. Two sets of transcripts are required.

    1. The first set of all official transcripts from each and all institutions attended should be sent in a sealed envelope to

For more detail, applicants should consult the Graduate Admissions Homepage at http://www.uga.edu/gradschool/admissions/requirements.html

Step II: Materials to be submitted directly to the Program in Educational Administration and Policy

Additional Materials for Ph.D. Applicants

  • A current resume or curriculum vitae
  • References. The applicant is required to secure three external letters of recommendation attached to the UGA Recommendation Form from individuals familiar with the applicant's professional and/or academic work. The three external letters of reference need to speak to the applicant’s ability to complete doctoral work.

Applicants must secure at least one formal recommendation from a former professor who has familiarity with academic qualifications needed to sustain the rigors of the Ph.D.

The faculty in the Program in Educational Administration and Policy will not provide letters of recommendation to applicants for the Ph.D.

Recommendation Forms are available in the on-line application packet in the Downloadable Forms section at the Graduate School website, as a downloadable file with the entire application packet. Although the Graduate School allows for the electronic filing of letters of recommendation, the Program in Educational Administration and Policy insists that letters and recommendation forms must be submitted by US mail to the Program in Educational Administration and Policy.

Applicants are instructed to fill out the top portion of the Recommendation Form completely, sign the Recommendation Form, complete the Graduate Coordinator’s name and address portion of the Recommendation Form, and ask those who are providing letters to attach the Recommendation Form to the detailed letter of recommendation.

The Recommendation Forms and the Letters of Recommendation are to be returned by the referee directly to the academic department

  • Statement of Purpose. A 3 to 5 page statement of purpose that links current and past professional and/or academic experience to future research interests and goals in the area of educational administration and policy.
  • Formal Writing Sample. Scholarly or academic writing is preferred—whether or not it has been published. If applicants have not published anything relevant, recent course papers are appropriate.

All of these materials should be sent to:

Ms. Amy Hill
Academic Advisor I
University of Georgia
Department of Lifelong Education, Administration, and Policy
850 College Station Road
315 River's Crossing
Athens, GA 30602

Once all materials are received, the faculty will review the complete application packet.

Notes to Ph.D. Applicants

  • Students are admitted once yearly to begin in fall semesters.
  • For Fall 2008, the deadline for the completed application is January 15, 2008. By this deadline, applicants will need to have completed the on-line application and paid the $ 50.00 non-refundable application fee with Graduate School Admissions.
  • All other materials (GRE scores, letters of recommendation and the Recommendation Forms, official transcripts, Current Resume or Curriculum Vitae, Statement of Purpose, and Formal Writing Sample) must be received by the Program in Educational Administration and Policy by February 4, 2008.
  • The applicant must either have the L5 certificate, agree to complete the requirements for L5 certification in addition to the requirements of the Ph.D., or sign a waiver stating that he/she understands that the coursework required for the Ph.D. does not satisfy the coursework needed for the L5 Certificate.
  • An application can not be considered until all materials are received.
