Doctor of Education Degree (Ed.D.) in Educational Leadership

General Information about the Doctor of Education Degree in Educational Leadership

The University of Georgia’s Ed.D. in Educational Leadership is a performance-based program of study designed to prepare school and system leaders who can advance the knowledge and practice of PreK-12 educational administration and support school and system improvement. This program of study, in partnership with Georgia school districts, will develop outstanding practitioner/scholars who can effectively lead schools and school districts in the 21st century.

This doctoral program in Educational Leadership effectively integrates coursework, research, and practice. The core coursework emphasizes studies in learning communities and professional development, organizational leadership, and school-community relations. Students will also acquire essential knowledge and practice in education law, finance, policy analysis, curriculum, and supervision.

A significant portion of the performance-based doctoral program in Educational Leadership consists of a supervised residency that provides students opportunities to practice and demonstrate proficiency in leadership tasks and skills that, when coupled with top quality, engaging, and professionally valuable coursework, will prepare candidates to be effective educational leaders. The residency experiences will provide students with substantial responsibilities for leading, facilitating, and making decisions typical of educational leaders that involve direct interaction and involvement with appropriate staff, students, parents, and community leaders. Individual leader induction or residency plans will focus on the students’ performance needs specific to their respective schools and/or school districts.

Recognizing that research methodology varies from field to field (e.g., law, finance, history, curriculum, supervision), the program allows students to individualize their research skills in consultation with their doctoral advisory committee, assuring that the research skills students learn will be the research skills those students most need for future success. The research component is designed to enhance knowledge and skills in the collection, analysis, and presentation of administrative data that are frequently used by schools and district offices, especially student achievement data.

The program culminates in a doctoral dissertation study that is of unique interest to the individual student in his/her own intellectual and professional context and may employ any of a wide variety of research
methods.

Plan A, Plan B

Those interested in applying for the Ed.D. in Educational Leadership should be aware that the degree is offered under two alternative plans , Plan A and Plan B. Both Plan A and Plan B consist of 55 semester hours of coursework, and it is important for applicants to familiarize themselves with the differences between the two plans.

The Plan A Ed.D. in Educational Leadership meets certification requirements of the Georgia Professional Standards Commission (pending approval).

If you are employed in a school district that currently has a partnership agreement with the University of Georgia , you may be eligible for enrollment in Plan A of the program. Please contact individuals in your local school district to determine if you meet district-level eligibility requirements for this option.
