Ed.S. in Adult Education
The Ed.S. program is designed to prepare students for careers as practitioners in positions and organizations related to the education of adults. All phases of the program encourage and support the acquisition of advanced knowledge and skills for effective practice in adult education. The specialist degree provides a professional education sequence for adult education practitioners to improve their abilities to work with adult students in a variety of areas such as adult basic education, technical and vocational programs and other adult education areas. Admission
The Specialist in Education degree is not currently open for applications.
Program of Study
A minimum of 33 hours is required for the Ed.S. degree. There are four major areas of course work: adult education core, adult education electives, other electives, and research. The course work for each area is described in greater detail below. In addition, students must prepare an Ed.S. Student Portfolio and complete a final oral examination.
- Adult Education Core (12 semesters hours)
Students select EADU 8020 plus any other three of the remaining four courses.

- Other Electives (6 semester hours)
Electives may be taken in any department. Courses should be selected through discussion with the student’s major professor.
- Research Course (3 semester hours)
Students must complete one three-hour course in statistics (ERSH 6300 or its equivalent), qualitative methods (QUAL 8400 or its equivalent), or an equivalent course approved by the student’s advisory committee.
