Contact Information

Forms of Communication:

Email:Students can usually access Email at certain locations in the largest cities (e.g., Nairobi, Eldoret, etc.) and at Moi University. However, expect slow service that must be paid for by the minute or by the number of transactions, even at schools. Additionally, the local internet-service provider could fail or citywide power outages can occur. For this reason, plan to use Email on a sporadic basis. To save money, you should plan/write your messages ahead of time.

Telephone: The program has a cellular telephone available for incoming calls at all times and calls can be received in most areas of the country. Calls to the U.S. from Kenya are expensive, ranging from $5-10/min. Telephone cards cannot be used and collect calls are not an option, the money will come from ready cash, which could otherwise be spent on gifts, souvenirs, food, etc. You and your family may want to plan for you to call home once or twice at scheduled times (keep in mind the 8-hour time difference) or while at a site they may wish to call you. The numbers will be provided prior to departure for Kenya. If you carry your own cellular please do use it in places that inconvenience others or around animals in the game parks.

Emergency Contact: KSAP participant names and the travel itinerary will be provided to the United States Embassy - Nairobi. The telephone number is 011-254-2-537800. The fax number is 254-2-537837. The U.S. State Department has a 24 h hotline: 202-647-5225. The vans we travel in are equipped with radio telephones are in contact with Nairobi and each other at all times. Destination details and contacts will be available prior to departure from Atlanta.

Postcards: Postcards make for a fun and memorable way to contact friends, family, places of work, etc. They are cheap and some very interesting/unique ones can be found at the many shops in downtown Nairobi, in Eldoret, and other major towns or tourist lodges. Kenya has beautiful stamp series. The arrival time, however, can be two weeks--so don't ask for a reply.
